What is LKFS?

I believe it’s important to think these days in terms of Loudness Units (“LU”). Having said this, LKFS stands for Loudness, K-weighted, correlated to Full Scale (“LKFS”) and is a loudness measurement with the objective to standardize audio signal levels for broadcast TV and video.

Loudness units correlated to Full Scale (or LUFS) is a synonym for “LKFS” introduced at EBU R128. However “LU” which is also a measurement unit used in EBU R128 represents Loudness, K-weighted but without direct absolute reference and thus it represents loudness level differences.

LKFS is also standard at ITU-R BS.1770.
